Moodle Accessibility Block

Summary

The accessibility block allows users to customize Moodle to their visual needs. It supports changing of text sizes and colour schemes. Customizations save to the user's session, allowing them to persist between pages, and can also be saved to the database allowing them to apply permanently.

Enabling the Accessibility Block

Faculty must enable this block in their Moodle course in order for it to be available to students. To enable the block please do the following:

  1. Navigate to your Moodle course.
  2. Turn editing on.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the left navigation menu and locate the "Add a Block" option.
  4. Select Accessibility:

  5. The Accessibility block will appear in the right hand menu, below already applied blocks in the course.

Using the Accessibility Block

The options in the Accessibility block from left to right, top to bottom are:

  • Decrease text size
  • Reset text size
  • Increase text size
  • Save your settings
  • Reset color settings
  • Lower contrast 1
  • Lower contrast 2
  • High contrast
  • Launch ATbar

The Accessibility Block ATbar feature creates a menu of accessibility options in the top portion of the course. The ATbar options include:

  • text to speech
  • style change
  • color overlay

Text to speech:

Highlight text that you wish to have read, and click on the text to speech button. The system will prompt you to choose between a male voice or a female voice.

Style Change:

Style change allows you to change the color of the ATbar tool bar, as well as text and link colors, and page color styles.

Color Overlay:

Color Overlay gives the user yellow, red, blue and green color filters to apply to the entire Moodle site.
