Delete and Recover files in Teams

Learn how to delete and recover files in Microsoft Teams from a channel, chat or the recycle bin.

Note: Deleted files are accessible from the recycle bin for only 93 days.

Delete a file from a channel

Go to the channel where the file was uploaded and select the Files tab. Select the file, then select Delete from the More options ... menu, or at the top of the app.

Delete a file from a chat

Currently, the only way to delete a file you've shared to a chat is to delete it from the Files list.

  1. Open Files on the left side of the app.

  2. Under Cloud storage, select the cloud service where you originally saved the file, like OneDrive.

  3. Go to the file you want and select More options ... Delete.

Recover a deleted channel file

If you deleted files from a channel and want them back, open the channel's Files tab and select Open in SharePoint. Once the SharePoint site opens, select Recycle bin on the left side of the page. This will show a list of all files deleted from every channel in the team. Right-click on your file and select Restore.

Restore items in the recycle bin that were deleted from Teams

When you delete items from a document library or list in Microsoft Teams or SharePoint, they aren't immediately removed. Deleted items go into the SharePoint site recycle bin for 93 days or until they are emptied from the recycle bin. The recycle bin isn't the same as the Windows recycle bin that you see on your desktop.

While items are in the site recycle bin, you can restore items you deleted to their original location.

Note: The information in this article also applies to OneDrive files. To learn how to restore files in OneDrive, see Restore deleted files or folders in OneDrive.
