Accessing and using the MATLAB portal

MATLAB Portal for Loyola Maryland

Loyola University Maryland has a Campus-Wide License for MATLAB, Simulink, and add-on products. Faculty, researchers, and students may use these products for teaching, research, and learning. The license allows individuals to install the products on university-owned equipment, as well as personally owned computers.

About MATLAB and Simulink

MATLAB, the language of technical computing, is a programming environment for algorithm development, data analysis, visualization, and numeric computation. Simulink is a graphical environment for simulation and Model-Based Design of multidomain dynamic and embedded systems. MathWorks produces nearly 100 additional products for specialized tasks such as data analysis and image processing.

How to Log into MATLAB Portal

Please note, if you have not done so, you MUST log into the MATLAB portal to associate your MATLAB account with Loyola’s license. To do so:

  1. Visit Loyola MATLAB portal.
  2. Select the button Sign in to get started.
  3. You will be prompted to log in with your Loyola credentials (if you are not already logged into another Loyola system.)
  4. Log into an existing MathWorks account if you have one. If you do not have one, walk through the steps to create one.
  5. Once you have done this, you are now ready to download. Skip to the steps below that are appropriate for your specific Operating System (Mac OS vs. PC)

Downloading MATLAB From Software Center (PC):

You will need to go to Software Center to download the software for install. This will allow you to install the software without the need for administrator credentials. Again, if you have not done so, please FIRST log into the MATLAB portal to associate your account with our license (see above).

How to find Software Center:

  1. In the bottom left menu tray next to the Windows icon, locate the circle icon.
  2. Click on the circle and type in the search box “Software Center”. Click on Software Center when the search returns a result.
  3. The application should appear in the top left of the list of applications. If you do not see the icon, you can search for the application from the search function with Software Center (top right).
** note, if you already had the software installed on your computer, you will need to contact MathWorks to have them update your account information on their end. You can contact them by phone at 508-647-7000. They are open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Downloading and Installing

  1. Double click the MATLAB icon to begin running the installer.
  2. On Software Center, you may see a notice that the installed “failed”, but a Windows prompt will open. Leave this screen open, and after about 5 minutes the installer will begin.
  3. Once the installer completes some automatic steps, you will see the screen below. Verify that “Activate automatically using the Internet” is selected and click Next.
  4. On the next screen, you will enter your MathWorks account information. Please make sure you have logged into the portal to associate your account with our license BEFORE you get to this step.
  5. You will be prompted to select a license or activate a key. Do NOT activate a new key. If you have signed in via the portal prior to this, Loyola’s license information will be populated for you. You simply need to click “Next”.
  6. Your Windows username will automatically populate on the next screen. Select “Next”.
  7.  A confirmation screen will appear with your account information. Select “Confirm”.
  8. That is all, your activation is completed. Select “Finish”.

Downloading MATLAB From Self Service (Mac):

You will need to go to Self Service to download the software for install. This will allow you to install the software without the need for administrator credentials. Again, if you have not done so, please FIRST log into the MATLAB portal to associate your account with our license (see above).

How to find Self Service:
  1. Open Finder and then open Applications.
  2. Locate the Self Service Application, and double click to open.
Downloading and Installing:
  1. Locate the MATLAB icon in Self Service and select Install.
  2. The install will run and will automatically launch once the install has completed.
  3. When the application launches, you will first see an "activate software" screen. Leave the setting as "Activate automatically using the Internet". Click Next.
  4. You will be prompted to log in to your MathWorks account. If you have not done so at this point, please go to the MATLAB portal to associate your account with the Loyola license. Enter your credentials and select Next.
  5. The Loyola license details will automatically populate. Make sure that "select a license" is chosen, and click Next.
  6. The installer will populate your Login Name. Select Next.
  7. A confirmation screen will appear, validate the information is correct, and select Confirm.
  8. You will be notified that the activation is complete. Click Finish.
